For “Real” Men
40% of men have never spoken to anyone about their mental health... you are not alone.
Men's mental health is a crucial yet often under-discussed aspect of overall well-being. While mental health challenges affect everyone, men face unique pressures and barriers that can impact how they experience and address these issues.
“Man up.”
“Men don’t cry.”
“Be a real man.”
Being a man in this world can be lonely, we’re here to tell you that you are not alone. Approximately 12.5% of men in England experience a mental health disorder, such as depression, anxiety, or stress. This means that if you’re sitting with a group of 10 men, at least 1, if not 2 of you will likely be battling with your mental health.
Why do men keep quiet about their mental health?
Stigma and masculinity norms play a big role in the secrecy of men’s mental health. Many men are socialised to be stoic, self-reliant, and emotionally reserved. These traditional norms of masculinity can discourage men from seeking help or expressing vulnerability, leading to untreated mental health conditions.
Common Mental Health Issues in Men:
-
- Depression and anxiety often go undiagnosed or are expressed differently (e.g., through irritability, anger, or substance use).
- Substance abuse is also more common in men, sometimes used as a coping mechanism for underlying mental health struggles.
- Suicide rates are significantly higher among men than women, particularly in middle-aged and older men.
Warning Signs to Watch For:
-
- Withdrawal from friends and activities
- Changes in sleep, appetite, or energy
- Increased use of alcohol or drugs
- Expressions of hopelessness or thoughts of self-harm
